Ready to start karate classes?
You have called or stopped into KoSho Karate and told one of the staff members that you or your child are interested in taking karate classes and you have a millions questions. The best way to start learning the answers is to try out a class or two. At KoSho, we highly recommend trying a class to see if KoSho Karate is right for you.
When you first speak to one of our staff members and express an interest for you or your child to start Karate, they will give you a schedule of classes and help you choose one to try out.
When you arrive for your tryout lesson be sure to tell one of the staff members that you are new and they will have one of the instructors come out to help you get started. (Parents if this is your child’s tryout lesson please be seated on one of the benches to watch).
The instructor will show your child how to get started. First we bow as soon as we enter the school. Next the teacher will show you the ‘deck’ where our classes are held and explain that we never wear shoes on deck. We do this to prevent outside dirt from contaminating the training area. The instructor will show you the shelves where you put your shoes. Then he will show you how to bow onto the deck.
Karate has a lot of simple etiquette and rituals that we use to maintain order and create a polite atmosphere in which to train. You will learn the etiquette very quickly and the higher-ranking students are always happy to show you how these things are done. Don’t worry that you didn’t walk in the door knowing these things, we don’t expect that, just be receptive to instruction and maybe a few gentle reminders as you go along.
You are a new student and since we use the rank system you will be one of the lowest ranking people on deck. Don’t despair, this simply means that you have all of the higher-ranking students to watch and learn from! (See the adult rank structure to see all of the belt ranks. When class starts the students will be told to line up, you’ll be told where your place in line is.
Then the class will begin. Listen to the instructor. Do as he/she says. Raise your hand to ask questions.
After your lesson you may speak to the teacher to ask questions and then you may speak to one of the staff members to learn about signing up for classes, how to get your uniform and equipment and when your classes are held.
Ask questions! We want you to be happy with your decision to join us at KoSho Karate. There is no need to be nervous but, as with all new things, there is an adjustment period. Feel free to ask any staff member or Black Belt questions to help you settle in. Many of our students have been with us for years. We want you to begin a long, happy association with KoSho.
Welcome and have fun!
