So what’s with all the bowing?

Karate uses etiquette and simple rituals to promote an orderly, polite and respectful learning atmosphere.  Bowing is our way of saying hello and thank you. Students and teachers bow to each other at the beginning and end of each class.  Students are always respectful of higher-ranking students, Black belts and Senseis. Higher-ranking students always show respect to newer students in turn.

The entire school is very respectful to Shihan Johnny Linebarger who is our leader and teacher of us all.  You will see that when Shihan comes out on deck the class will stop and bow to him.  We bow every time we enter the school and before we leave the building.  We are showing gratitude to the school just for being there for us to learn in.

When one bows directly to someone else, eye contact is kept while slightly bowing forward from the waist.  Kids can get carried away with all the bowing, turning it into more of a mockery than a politeness!  This is not allowed!

One bows when stepping onto the deck (training area) and again just before stepping off.  If one is late and class has already started.  We stand on the corner of the deck until the teacher invites us to join the class.

We bow to our training partners before and after we have worked with them often shaking hands, especially after sparring.  There are other very formal rituals that are used during ceremonies.  You will learn about that during training.
